Interview with Mr. Rajeev Samant CEO Sula Vineyards

Recently Justnashik team interviewed Mr. Rajeev Samant, MD & CEO of Sula Vineyards.  Sula Vineyards has emerged as one of the most prestigious wine producer of the country, producing nearly 7 million litters of wine and crushing 8700 Tonnes of grapes this year, Sula is constantly pushing their own benchmarks from its inception in late 90′s.Since then Sula has always been in the forefront of Indian wine revolution.Right now they have around 28 different wines in their portfolio and from last year Sula has also started producing India’s first Grape Seed oil.

Sula has their own estate in India’s wine capital Nashik ‘aka’ Nashik Valley where grapes are cultivated and crushed in their winery, Sula has also pioneered wine tourism in country, Right from wine tours, Wine Tasting and one of the biggest wine music festival in the country.

Interview of Mr RaJeev Samant

Mr. Rajeev Samant (MD & CEO of Sula Vineyards) at Sula Vineyards

  1.       What drew you to wine making?

It was pure serendipity, it so happened that I had been living in California where I had developed a taste for wine and I decided to return to India and we happened to be in Nashik for a family wedding which is where my father was born and we owned a small piece of land. Once thing led to another and I decided to start farming the land because I wanted to spend part of my life in the country not in the city. Couple of years later I realized that Nashik had a lot of grapes but no wine and that was my A-ha! moment and I felt that I was the right person at the right time and at the right place to do it

  1.       Tell us something about Sula Vineyards, Specially this year vintages?

Today, Sula Vineyards’ award-winning wines are available nationwide at the finest hotels and restaurants, and also internationally. 2013 was the probably the best white wine vintage so far and the Sauvignon Blanc especially stands out.

  1.       When not drinking Sula wines, what are some of your favorite wines?

I’m a lover of Pinot Noir, from Burgundy, Oregon and New Zealand. And also Albariño and Ribera del Duero from Spain, among many others.

  1.       What is your favorite summertime food and wine pairing?

I have my own organic vegetable garden, so in the summer I’m generally vegetarian with a lot of cooling salads and cool soups and a chilled glass of our new Reserve Chenin Blanc is the perfect accompaniment.

  1.       What is the most exciting thing happening with Indian wine today?

With every vintage, new varietals are being launched. Tempranillo is looking very exciting for the future, as is Riesling. On the consumer side, you have increasing awareness and excitement which can only be good for the future of Indian wine. Wine tourism is also becoming increasingly popular Sula Vineyards opened the country’s first Tasting Room at Sula in 2005 and India’s first vineyard resort in 2007.

  1.       Future plan of Sula Wines.

The future is definitely bright. The wines are getting better every year and more and more Indians are drinking more and more wine every year. So this is going to be one of the world’s most exciting growth markets for wine and Sula is by far the # 1 consumer’s choice

  1.       Tell us something about Nashik.

Nashik has such huge advantages like the climate, the beautiful surrounding landscape and proximity to Mumbai. I wish that awareness levels could be elevated in Nashik so that we could, one day, proclaim ourselves as the city with the cleanest air and water in India, that’s my dream for Nashik. A sustainable, super eco-friendly development led, perhaps, by the wine industry.

Covered in paisley in riotous tropical colors, the limited edition Brut Tropicale is a Blanc de Noirs, améthodechampenoise sparkler made from premium black grapes including Pinot Noir. The paisley motif – symbolic of life and eternity – has been interpreted and adopted as a quintessential part of the various cultures of India, spanning Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Today, the motif prevails in special occasions, ranging from henna patterns, ethnic fabrics, jewelry and such, emphasizing that most celebrations begin and end with paisley.

To mark the occasion, Rajeev Samant, Founder and CEO of Sula Vineyards, said, “We wanted to do something exceptional to celebrate Sula’s 15 fabulous years. The result of two years of hard work is this beautiful Blanc de Noirs, a special wine. The limited edition Brut Tropicale is classy yet fun – perfect for celebrations and gifting this festive season.”

In the last 15 years, Sula Vineyards has also been a pioneer in India’s wine tourism opening the country’s first winery Tasting Room in 2005 and first vineyard resort, Beyond by Sula, in 2007. With 200,000 visitors in 2014, Sula is one of the most visited wineries in the world and the #1 spot where Indians first taste wine. Sula’s award-winning wines are available nationwide at the finest hotels and restaurants, and are also exported worldwide. The company is also a leading wine and spirits importer, with a portfolio of prestigious brands like Remy Cointreau, Cono Sur, Hardys, Ruffino and Asahi.

Tourists welcome Sula’s redeemable entry fee measure to make vineyard premise safer

0
0

With a rise in unwanted social elements, women’s safety has become a national concern these days and thus, Sula Vineyards too, has taken steps towards making the vineyard experience safer for women tourists as well as others. For the first time since its inception Sula Vineyards in July 2018 started mandating an entry fee for guests visiting the vineyard at Govardhan, Nashik to which the tourists have given a very positive response. This measure has helped in filtering out the crowd and keeping a section of the miscreants away.

Due Sula’s increasing popularity, the vineyard attracts a huge crowd of about 6000-7000 visitors every week. People from all over the country and abroad are visiting Nashik to experience the wine-making process at Sula, thus contributing to the wine revolution that Sula has commenced. However, with a huge crowd in the premise, the probabilities of malefactors entering the vineyard had also increased. Many of these people are not interested in anything except harassing tourists, thus maligning Sula as well as Nashik. To filter out these mischievous elements, many steps have been taken by the vineyard like imposing a redeemable entry fee of Rs 100.

These steps have been taken with an aim to make lakhs of visitors that flock to the winery more comfortable.

“Going ahead with our people-friendly practices and quickly responding to a few grievances about unwanted elements we have decided to filter out the crowd. We are concentrating on quality of tourists and thus, we have started collecting an entry fee of Rs 100 from visitors against which we issue redeemable vouchers. The idea is not to earn off the entry but to filter the crowd making the experience of the tourists more ideal. Sula was always a safe place for women travellers and this measure will make their experience safer,” says Vice President – Hospitality, Sula Vineyards, Monit Dhavale.

On the occasion of World Tourism Day this month, we also spoke to some of the visitors who gave a very positive response to these newly deployed added safety measures. Restaurateur and a regular at the vineyard Shahrukh Patel says, “It is a very good initiative by Sula to ensure safety and comfort of guests. Many a times women and even couples are beleaguered by some miscreants who come to the vineyard with no intention to learn anything about wines or enjoy the ambience but only to ‘have some fun’.”

Suman Dutta, who runs an educational institute in Nashik and likes to visit Sula often, said, “There are a few people who come to the vineyard just to ogle over others. It is great that this entry fee will push out that crowd entirely making the experience more safe and friendly for women travellers.”

Sula Vineyards is the market leader and consumer favorite in Indian wine. Their award-winning wines are available nationwide at the finest hotels and restaurants, and are also exported to 25 countries.

Sula is a pioneer in India’s wine tourism opening the country’s first winery Tasting Room in 2005, the first vineyard resort – Beyond by Sula, in 2010 and India’s first heritage winery resort The Source at Sula in 2017. With over 350,000 visitors last year, Sula is one of the most visited wineries in the world and the #1 spot where Indians first taste wine. Firmly committed to remaining at the forefront of Indian wine, Sula continues to experiment with new grape varieties, engage in sustainable agriculture and support the local rural economy. Sula is one of the world’s most sustainable wine producers with more than half its energy coming from solar. In November 2017, Sula launched their first premium wine from their Karnataka vineyards. INESH SINGH joins the team in NASHIK

Sula Vineyards, India’s no. 1 winery and largest wine producer, is taking its efforts at sustainability to the next level. It has just announced the appointment of its first Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) – Inesh Singh. In this newly-created role, Singh is responsible for leading Sula’s approach to sustainability as well as developing the sustainability agenda at the company.  The aim to make Sula the most sustainable wine making company in the country and the world will be defined by three key pillars: being good stewards of the environment, making positive social impact, and ensuring high standards of corporate governance. He will drive efforts to integrate and embed sustainability initiatives throughout the company. Sula hopes this will go on to have a ripple effect throughout the wine industry to make sustainable choices.

Sula has already made great strides in integrating sustainability in its operations. The brand is committed to reducing carbon emissions which is evident through approx. 2 MW of solar installation at their sites, which in turn helps reduce about 1800 tons of CO2 emissions which would have been otherwise generated if coal power was used. The brand has installed rainwater harvesting ponds at most of their operational facilities to reduce the stress on local water bodies and grown tree plantations to increase the green cover close to the resort. Sula has also taken great care to maximize the use of energy efficient lighting to further reduce their electricity consumption, and subsequently the Greenhouse gas emissions being generated by the company.

Inesh Singh remarked, “We will be looking at sustainability from a holistic perspective to enable ourselves to have a positive impact on the planet, the communities we operate in, and the people whose lives we touch, including our customers. The intent is not only to do the right things, but to ensure that we do it the right way.”

With a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and an MBA in Finance and Project Management, Singh comes with prior experience, working as a design engineer in thermal power plants, which gave him the opportunity to witness firsthand the damage non-renewable energy was having on the environment. This exposure led him to search for opportunities in sustainability and landed a summer internship with PepsiCo in their North American unit, NAB. It was a very natural progression from that point on, and he was promoted to the PepsiCo Global HQ as one of the first few members of the recently established Sustainability Office before moving into his new role at Sula Vineyards in Nashik.

Sula Vineyards plants 5000 saplings under ‘Shramdaan’ activity

Sula Vineyards, India’s leading wine producer, took another step towards being the most sustainable winery in Asia. The wine giant joined hands with the forest department of the Government of Maharashtra for an exhaustive tree plantation drive in Nashik. As a part of the voluntary activity ‘Shramdaan’, Sula planted over 5000 healthy saplings spread over 11 acres of land in Vasadi village. These saplings included native species like Karanja, Sheesham, Jamun, Arjuna, Aapta, Tamarind, Bamboo and some medicinal plants.

The brand not only planted the saplings but also willingly undertook the responsibility of digging pits, fencing of the entire area and ensuring safety of the plants till they grow into self-sustainable trees. The winery is also in conversation with the authorities to acquire three times the current area of plantation to grow over 25,000 trees by the end of this year.

Sustainable practices like mass plantations, use of solar energy, water harvesting and community service are the heart of India’s most loved wine brand.

“We believe in making wine keeping the future in mind. Our efforts have included rainwater harvesting, usage of solar panels and waste management. It is imperative for businesses to realize the responsibility towards the environment and we take full onus of our practices. The climate change is affecting everyone and it calls for immediate actions. Our journey towards a greener future will include many more tree plantation drives, moving to even more solar energy and reducing our water consumption.” said Founder and CEO of Sula Vineyards, Mr. Rajeev Samant.

Present during the plantation drive were Deputy Conservator of Forests, Nashik West Shivaji Phule and Range Forest Officer Ravindra Bhoge. From Sula, Senior Vice-President (Public Affairs) Sanjeev Paithankar and Deputy General Manager (Legal Affair) Kishor Ahire were present for the drive.

Sula is on a mission to become the most sustainable winery in India and Asia by 2021. They have played an active role in Nashik by not only increasing the green cover of the city but by also providing livelihood to thousands of people involved with the winery. It is also cultivating additional land across Maharashtra and Karnataka, to boost to the agriculture sector. The company has also installed water ATMs in nearby communities which provide water security and safe drinking water to many villages near their plant.

But today, this delicate biodiversity balance has been eroded by global shifts in population, urbanization and earth’s depleting finite resources; the seed of what we now know as Sustainable Tourism.

Sula Vineyards, India’s largest and most awarded wine brand needs no introduction. With over 2 decades of leading all things wine, the country’s leading winemaker has proudly put the legacy and heritage of Indian wines on a global platform. Be it wines, hospitality or even the music festival; Sula Vineyards endeavours to keep evolving when it comes to the art of Indian wine making.

The proud curators of wine tourism in the country since 2005; The Tasting Rooms at Sula in Nashik are the place on earth where most people have tried wine for the first time. It also opened India’s first heritage winery resort The Source at Sula in 2017 in the city.

Now, Sula Vineyards is pioneering Sustainable Tourism in Asia. The brand, over the years, has just not pleased the palate but also the planet. Sula Vineyards has evolved from being just a winery to being one of the most sustainable wineries in the world.

More than 75% of our power comes from solar

The most abundant natural resource and not owned by anyone; the sun’s rays are put to good use by the brand. Almost all the rooftops are covered with solar panels in the vineyards in Nashik; hard to miss them while taking a leisurely stroll!

Every drop counts!

We recycle almost 40 million litres of water a year, which is enough to fill the iconic Gangapur Lake!

To make this possible, we’ve made changes in every aspect of how our resorts operate. Water-efficient bathroom fittings have been installed, housekeeping keep our hotels spotless with recycled water and guests are encouraged to take small actions to help us too, like turning off running water when they don’t need it.

We also use drip irrigation in our vineyards which cuts water consumption by almost half as compared to traditional flood irrigation methods.

No plastic in sight

We love the sound of glass clinks! Even if it’s not wine! Guests are often startled by the absence of plastic mineral water bottles in our resorts. These are replaced by reusable glass bottles with mineral water. Dedicated efforts are undertaken to eradicate plastic from all food and beverage offerings including cutlery and packaging.

Almost no waste to landfills!

Sula has also recently started generating its own biogas, fuelled by food waste generated by the restaurants. We are so proud that all these measures mean almost no waste generated from wineries is being sent to landfills.

Supporting the local community

The hospitality operations of Sula that employees over 160 people believes in supporting the local community through its CSR efforts as well as employing people from surrounding villages. Where people once struggled with the basics of life, Sula has created a positive impact on the lives of many. Happy faces do not shy away from showing off basic luxuries like clean drinking water, a refrigerator or even colour pencils for children!

We recognise a clear commitment to sustainability, demonstrated through good practice and policy to make a positive contribution to reducing impact on the environment. We are all aware of the importance of tackling climate change. Sula harnesses a deep commitment to being sustainable and implementing green policies, while maintaining excellent guest experience. We aim to be one of the most environmentally friendly hotels in the country,” says Monit Dhavale, Senior Vice President of Hospitality Operations at Sula Vineyards.

Sula has not only set the bar in India’s wine market but has also empowered hundreds of people by generating employment and improving the lives of people living in communities that are based in the areas we operate. With growing business comes serious responsibilities towards the environment and community as well. Sustainability is etched deep in our values and is just not a fad for us. We truly believe in making wine keeping the future in mind. We’ve come a long way yet there’s so much more to do! But like they one sip at a time,” says Rajeev Samant, CEO, Sula Vineyards.

Besides red and whites, Sula Vineyard’s has a keen inclination towards all things green. The brand’s existence in the industry is a true symbol of its potential and vision. Its wholesome holistic wine experience marks Indian wines on the global grape map!

Sula Vineyards was the proud recipient of 13 awards at the recently held Indian Wine Awards, 2019. Sula Vineyards’ wins included 6 Silver and 4 Gold medals. The Sula Riesling 2019 won the ‘Best Pairing with Chicken Kung Pao’ award while The Source Grenache Rose 2019 India won the ‘Best in Show’ along with the Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec 2018, Argentina. The winners can clearly be identified with a striking sticker on each bottle that makes it stand out from the rest.

The 3rd edition of the Indian Wine Awards recognised 116 winning wines being crowned from a total of 376 wine nominations and 17 restaurants for their wine programs. The India Wine Awards led by the most qualified and foremost wine professionals in India and abroad, is an initiative powered by Sonal Holland MW, India’s first Master of Wine, Founder- Director of SoHo Wine Club and her namesake Academy. Wines entered in the competition were judged over two days, in September this year, by a panel chaired by Sonal Holland MW, comprising 17 distinguished wine professionals, hospitality leaders and tastemakers. As always, the tastings were done blind, without any knowledge of producer, region or quality level.

Over the past two decades, Sula Vineyards has continually established itself as a leader in the Indian wine industry, with milestones across its winemaking, tourism and business ventures. Since the sale of its first bottle of wine in 1999, the brand has made a mark in the Indian wine industry by capturing over 60% of the wine market and establishing itself as a pioneer and innovator par excellence. It is also one of the most sustainable wineries in the world.

Applauding the India Wine Awards initiative and the wins, Rajeev Samant, Founder & CEO, Sula Vineyards said, “The India Wine Awards is such an important initiative for our wine industry in India. We need a credible awarding body that recognizes noteworthy wines being produced in India as well as imported wines that are coming into the country; something that a consumer can refer to when selecting their wines. India Wine awards, as the country’s apex and most premium awards is a necessary step towards recognising wines that are worth drinking.”

Speaking on the occasion, Sonal Holland MW said, “We feel proud that in three years, since our launch in 2017, we have established India Wine Awards as the biggest and the most authoritative wine competition in the country that holds authenticity, credibility, relevance and integrity as its 4 cornerstones. It is equally exciting that the India Wine Awards which recognizes, rewards and celebrates the best of wines and wine programs in the country, continues to get bigger, bolder and broader in its vision, with education, empowerment and experiences at the heart of its creative intent.”

The Indian Wine Awards reiterate the fine winemaking skills and choicest selection of grapes that has been the brand’s forte and establishes Sula as a forerunner even today.

Exploring the new menu at Sula Vineyard’s Tasting Room

We have always been a fan of the spectacular view from Sula’s tasting room, seating amidst the lush green vineyards and sipping wine with the sunset is a perfect afternoon escape from the city chaos. This is a perfect excuse for a leisurely evening every Nashikkar is looking for. So we heard that Sula has revamped the food at the tasting room we couldn’t resist exploring the new menu.

The newly revamped menu has something for everyone. From dabeli and kanda bhajiyas for a local flavor to thin-crust pizzas, salads, Mediterranean quick bites and Asian small plates, Tasting Room’s new food menu have a delicious selection of popular dishes from around the world. You won’t want to leave without a dessert (paired beautifully with Sula’s Late Harvest or Sparkling Shiraz). We especially recommend the Nutella crêpes with whipped cream and cookie dough apple pie with ice cream.

We had a selection of dishes including falafel, Onion-garlic-green chilly pizza, cheesy garlic bread, dabeli, fish finger, prawns koliwada,  chicken satay, salt & pepper prawns, overloaded nachos. If you are amateur at food and wine pairing please take the help of staff to order you a perfect meal, We opted for Sula’s Late Harvest or Sparkling Shiraz and Chardonnay and Rasa. A basic rule of food pairing is sipping your wine while chewing your food to get the flavors, unlike other spirits where you eat the food after gulping down the drink.

We especially loved the fish fingers and tarter sauce, BBQ onion pizzas with Sparkling Shiraz, the bubbly texture of sparkling wine really complements the fried food and hence when you are in confusion always opt-out for the sparkling wine. We also love the Rasa with cheesy garlic bread, it was perhaps the best garlic bread we have had in town so far.

Post this humongous meal we dug into some Nutella crepes and apple pie, and believe us there was no better ending than sipping Sula’s late harvest with the thin and sugar-coated Nutella crepes, apple pie also lived up to the expectations and hints of the cinnamon and vanilla chocolate with the late harvest match made in the heaven.

This spectacular meal was indeed an experience, and we are eagerly waiting for our next visit really soon.

Nashik-based York Winery to merge with Sula Vineyards

India’s leading winery Sula Vineyards has announced its merger with family-owned Nashik-based York Winery which will soon become a wholly owned subsidiary of Sula.

Rajeev Samant, founder CEO of Sula Vineyards, said the merger is a triple win — for York, Sula and wine consumers. “Smaller wineries find it very difficult to get distribution, and the pandemic has been a big blow. Sula will help York get a wider distribution and continue the great winemaking tradition of the Gurnani family with Kapil Gurnani continuing as winemaker and brand ambassador,” he said.

The York Winery label rights have also been sold to Sula. “We will also be able to expand our hospitality operations across the road to our neighbour York, thus boosting Nashik’s wine tourism offerings. And there are synergies to be had from combining some operations. Consumers benefit from seeing more York brands on more shelves across the country, expanding consumer choice. It’s a great fit overall,” Samant said.

Sula, the largest Indian winery, enjoys over a 65% market and has been the biggest in India in terms of wine tourism, attracting nearly four lakh wine tourists every year, including over 15,000 visitors to the two-day annual SulaFest. When the lockdown was eased earlier this year, Sula Vineyards had reported 95% occupancy at its 51-room resort.

Ravi Gurnani, director, York Winery, did not go into details of the merger, but said the York brand will continue to grow. “The merger will give our brand a wider distribution reach and expand our market,” he said.

The deal will also mean Sula can use York’s facility, which has a tasting room and restaurant, for wine tourism. The winery has a production capacity of 400,000 litres.
